Do you know the Great things about Data Visualization?

Data visualization. The definition of that's more and more spoken of, on the other hand possess a feeling that many people lack the real definition or real feeling by what data visualization actually is. Or, what it really needs to be. First Let me try to clarify how it is, and just then may i consider exactly what the direct benefits of meaningful data visualization are.- data visualization designer

Although some activities that may be considered as data visualizations are extremely old, most development has took place days gone by 30-40 years. In that period, from the first organized papers of John Tukey or Edward Tufte, I have faith that many scientists and later IT professionals felt like I felt when first shown such literature. The dominant feeling was that everything fell into place i asked myself how could I make a lot of mistakes in my professional life linked to building reports, graphs etc.

Well, i think that the greatest mistakes in data visualization are produced because people don't pay the mandatory level of care about it; they may be sure they know what they are doing. Even on commercials from top BI vendors, you can see glossy dashboards filled with colors, 3D bar graphs and 3D transparent pie charts. Towards the untrained eye that seems great, but that is the main with the problem - a couple of seconds 'looks' great. But it's informative? Plenty of colors for encoding visual information brings about visual noise; on 3D bar graphs you can not read measures correctly, so if you're assigned a 3D transparent pie-chart, just pick any two slices and attempt to think about which slice is larger and by simply how much?

I hope that you now agree there's far more to visual presentation of quantities then in order to click a 'convert to graph' button in certain application. As we consult fields of psychology, human visual systems and cognition or gestlt principles of visual perception, we become conscious that data visualization is a thing that has to be done properly and, more importantly, it can be learned and taught. Let's emphasize one example. There's well-known initial phase of visual perception that develops quickly below the degree of consciousness called preattentive processing. It enables every individual being competent at detecting a unique group of visual attributes at great speed. The 1st example that springs in mind will be the very text you read. If I require you to count how frequently did the term 'visual' exist in this text, you'll need at least 10 or 20 seconds on an answer. But, if every word 'visual' can be found in bold style and colored red, recognition will probably be imminent. That'll be because improvement in color will likely be preattentively perceived. Other such categories include - for example - position, orientation, shape or size differences.

After a data visualization designer knows such simple principles, he is able to apply them to any report or graph, data analysis or information dashboard. Only then will it give you a powerful ways to understand data. When performed correcly, data visualization can make us think, compare data, read stories from our data, will put data within the right context and finally help decision-makers to make the right choices.
